Meet Phill Kline
Phill Kline
is a fifth-generation Kansan who Kansas voters chose to be the state's
41st Attorney General in 2003. Born in Kansas City, Kansas, less
than nine miles from where his great-great grandfather settled in the
Old Quindaro Township in 1870, Kline was one of five children raised by
a single parent. That experience taught him early on the importance of
hard work, dedication to excellence, and commitment to justice.
A graduate of Shawnee Mission Northwest High School in Shawnee, Kline attended Central Missouri State University on a wrestling scholarship. After receiving degrees in political science and public relations, he attended the University of Kansas School of Law where he served as Associate Editor of the Kansas Law Review and Editor of the Kansas Criminal Justice Review.
After earning his law degree in 1987, Kline joined the Kansas City law firm Blackwell Sanders where he counseled large corporate and government clients including the State of California, the City of Los Angeles, Black and Veatch Engineering, Emerson Electric Company, and Associated Wholesale Grocers. Kline helped his clients navigate through complex civil litigation and successfully defended them against a variety of tort and contract claims in numerous state and federal courts across our nation.
Kline's legal experience in private practice covers medical malpractice defense, products liability defense, major public construction arbitration, and mediation and litigation on projects involving hundreds of millions of dollars.
In 1992, Phill Kline was elected to the Kansas House of Representatives. He quickly became recognized as a leader in the fight to protect the vulnerable and for more responsible government. Throughout his eight years in the legislature he held major leadership positions, authored six new crime victims' rights laws, co-wrote Kansas' welfare reform, and was recognized as "Legislator of the Year" by the state's developmentally disabled and mental health communities.
As Kansas Attorney General, Phill Kline has continued his efforts to protect the most vulnerable in our society: our children, seniors, and the developmentally and physically disabled.
Republican Attorneys General from across the country sought his leadership by electing Attorney General Kline as Chairman of the Republican Attorneys General Association in December 2003. He also was named Co-Chair of the Sexual Predator Task Force for the National Association of Attorneys General. He is the current President of the Midwest Attorneys General Association.
Phill Kline lives in Johnson County with his wife, Deborah, and their daughter, Hillary.
